Frequently Asked Questions
What is Portland Backpack?
Portland Backpack’s mission is to serve children who are at risk of hunger by providing food sacks for weekend days when food scarcity is higher. We believe that engaging the community in our efforts creates a greater impact that reaches beyond reducing hunger.
We offer a simple solution to a larger issue by putting the food in children’s hands. We offer our services at your school!
What is in a food sack?
Every food sack contains two main meals, two snacks, two fruits, two breakfast items and a care card.
Who can receive a food sack?
We are an opt-in program; any PK-5 child attending your school can sign up to receive a food sack. Please connect with your school lead to sign up.
When do food sacks go out?
Food sacks are distributed every Thursday/Friday before school is out. Please check in with the school lead at your school to know their distribution day
How can teachers/staff support Portland Backpack?
School staff can support school leads by making sure food sacks get to children’s hands and sharing about our program to parents.
